Recently, many people have been interested in isopropyl alcohol, which is an important organic raw material and solvent.
As a chemical raw material, isopropyl alcohol can be used to produce hydrogen peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone, isopropylamine, isopropyl ether, isopropyl chloride, isopropyl fatty acid esters, and chlorinated fatty acid isopropyl esters. In fine chemicals, it can be used to produce isopropyl nitrate, isopropyl xanthate, triisopropyl phosphite, aluminum isopropoxide, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. It can also be used to produce isopropyl acetate, thymol, and gasoline additives.
Isopropyl alcohol is a relatively inexpensive solvent in industry, with wide applications. It is freely miscible with water and has stronger dissolving power for lipophilic substances than ethanol. It can be used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, rubber, coatings, shellac, and alkaloids. It can be used in the production of coatings, inks, extractants, and aerosol agents. It can also be used as an antifreeze agent, cleaning agent, gasoline additive, dispersant in pigment production, fixing agent in dyeing industry, and antifogging agent for glass and transparent plastics. It is used as a diluent for adhesives, and also used as an antifreeze agent and dehydrating agent.
Isopropyl alcohol is used as a standard substance in chromatographic analysis for the determination of barium, calcium, copper, magnesium, nickel, potassium, sodium, strontium, nitrite, and cobalt.
It is used as a defoamer in water-based fracturing fluids for oil wells. It forms explosive mixtures with air and can ignite and explode when exposed to fire or high heat. It can react violently with oxidizing agents.
In the electronics industry, it can be used as a cleaning and degreasing agent. In the oil industry, it is used as an extractant for cottonseed oil and can also be used for degreasing animal-derived tissue membranes.
